Olivia asks:
How do you even begin to come up with the deductions that Sherlock makes from someone?
Since writing Sherlock have you started seeing the world in a completely different way?
Mark Gatiss:
The deductions are very, very hard to do! Conan Doyle himself sort of gives up after a while.
Not sure we actually look at the world differently but you're certainly always on the look out for something that might have potential as a deduction. We have a sort of bank of them that might fit in at various places. Doyle used to work backwards from the result. Like a magician. And that's probably still the cleverest way. How could you possibly work out that someones wife had ceased to love him? That sort of approach.
Was the theory Sherlock told Anderson actually how Sherlock survived the fall? John may not care how he did it, but I do...
In 'The Empty Hearse', Sherlock presents a perfectly acceptable and rational theory as to how he faked his death. Anderson, quite rightly, has some questions about the method but there's no reason why it didn't happen like that. You may believe what you want!

When you were writing Mary Morstan into the show, were you cautious of disrupting the dynamic between Sherlock and John?
Steven Moffat:
As ever, we followed Doyle. Most adaptations either or ignore Mary, or make her relationship with Sherlock adversarial. But we know better than to contradict the the great man in important matters. Sherlock and Mary get on fine in the originals, and there's never any suggestion that she gets in the way of their adventures - quite the opposite. So we expanded on that idea, rather than overwrite, and I do think it has worked very well.

Martje Bos asks:
Do you think Arthur Conan Doyle would watch Sherlock if he was still alive?
Mark Gatiss:
We'd like to think that he'd enjoy it.
He was famously cavalier about his most famous creation but we've striven from the beginning to be as true as we can to the great spirit of Sherlock Holmes.
Most of all, we hope he'd recognise the amount of fun we have.
Depending on your view of Spiritualism, of course, he might well be watching! Sitting on the corner with his pipe, trying to watch Red Button episodes.
Steven Moffat:
Probably. No idea what he'd think, but the updating wouldn't bother him - or at least it wouldn't surprise him.
Every Sherlock Holmes film made in his lifetime (and there were many) was updated - even the hugely successful Stoll series, of which he greatly approved.
Although I think he might have made a mild objection to that updating, so maybe I'm wrong. I realise this answer is in now way helpful so I'm giving up on it.

Raeesa Potnis asks:
Did you ever fear that the new villain wouldn't be able to live up to the standards set by Moriarty?
Steven Moffat:
Right up until the point I sat down and watched Lars Mikkelson's audition.
